Growing in the early years

Durham University Botanic Gardens
A practical day to explore ideas for using the grounds of your setting as a learning resource, whether you have a grey yard or green acres to grow in. We will explore the Botanic gardens and look at growing opportunities for your own setting, including wildlife, food and sensory planting. Through practical activities and discussions we will investigate opportunities to take the EYFS outdoors in a creative way. This day will take part mostly outdoors, please dress appropriately.

Food growing in schools

East Durham College, Houghall Campus
This day will enable practitioners with little experience of growing to work with their children in setting up a successful food-growing area. Through a mix of practical activities and discussions we will explore vegetable and fruit growing and opportunities for curriculum delivery. The day will take part mostly outdoors, please dress appropriately.

Growing in early years and foundation stage

Teesville Infants School
The aim of the day is to open up the multitude of opportunities a school garden can provide to Early Years and Foundation Stage practitioners. We intend to give a holistic approach and will begin with how to develop a school garden with EYFS children in mind. This will be followed by ideas of linking your gardening activities to the Early Learning Goals and wider curriculum and will end with ideas of what to do with the produce you grow. Plenty of resources will be made available to take away.

Food growing in schools

St Peter’s C of E Voluntary Controlled Primary School

To enable teachers with little experience of fruit or vegetable growing to work with their children in setting up a successful food-growing area. The course will look at setting up your own food-growing area and explain how to grow vegetables and fruit, supported by practical exercises and links to the curriculum.

Keeping animals to enhance the curriculum

East Durham College, Houghall Campus

This day will help you get started with keeping animals, from guinea pigs and rabbits to hens and sheep. Through a mix of practical activities and discussions we will explore all the issues around keeping animals in school and their benefits to the curriculum. The day will take place mostly outdoors on a working farm. The day will be useful for practitioners in EYFS and key stages 1-4.

Setting up a school garden – growing in KS3 & KS4

Bydales School

The aim of the course is to show the ways in which a school garden can be used in Key Stage 3 and 4. Following an introduction about school garden development, the course will explore ways gardens can be used to deliver the curriculum. Aspects of growing food, wildlife gardening and composting will be covered, as will Health and Safety, Risk Assessments and funding.

Setting up a school garden

This course will help you to set up a garden within the school grounds for any age group. Through a mix of practical activities and discussions we will explore; selection of the site, finding funding, what to grow (vegetables, plants for sale, wildlife gardens etc.), greenhouse/polytunnel gardening, health and safety and opportunities for curriculum delivery. The day will take place mostly outdoors, please dress appropriately.
