Penstemon may be deciduous or evergreen perennials or subshrubs, with simple, narrow leaves and racemes or panicles of bell-shaped or funnel-shaped flowers in summer and early autumn

'Evelyn' is a compact and bushy semi-evergreen perennial to 60cm in height, with narrow foliage and slim panicles of tubular rose-pink flowers 2.5cm in length, the throat white with dark red lines
