Penstemon may be deciduous or evergreen perennials or subshrubs, with simple, narrow leaves and racemes or panicles of bell-shaped or funnel-shaped flowers in summer and early autumn
'Cherry' is a perennial to 1m in height, with lance-shaped leaves, and narrow, bright cherry-red flowers 4.5cm in length, striped red on white in the throat, and borne on slender stalks in narrow panicles
