Polygonatum are rhizomatous herbaceous perennials with erect or arching stems bearing glossy, elliptic leaves and pendent, tubular or bell-shaped flowers, sometimes followed by black or red berries

'Variegatum' makes a spreading clump of arching stems to 1m tall, with lance-shaped, cream-edged leaves to 15cm long, and small clusters of slightly fragrant, green-tipped, cream flowers in late spring and early summer
