Genista are deciduous, sometimes spiny, shrubs or small trees with small, simple or trifoliate leaves and solitary, racemose or clustered, pea-like yellow flowers which are sometimes fragrant

'Royal Gold' is a deciduous dwarf shrub of upright growth, with small, narrow dark green leaves and deep golden-yellow flowers in dense erect racemes often clustered into panicles, in spring and early summer
