Bedgebury Pinetum is the national conifer collection: the International Dendrological Research Institute considers it the best conifer collection in the world. It was founded as a joint venture between the Forestry Commission and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew: the first plants for the pinetum were raised at Kew in 1921 and planted out at Bedgebury four years later. The collection boasts some 330 different species and more than 2,000 cultivars growing in landscaped woodland around a series of lakes and streams - stunning when reflected by the water. But Bedgebury is not just for conifer-lovers. The woodland garden is also well known for its deciduous trees: it has fine collections of oaks and maples, azaleas and rhododendrons. A new Japanese glade was added in 1996. Bedgebury is also good for its autumn colour and one of the best places we know for a winter walk. Good for wildlife, too. |
