The apotheosis of Scottish rock gardening, Branklyn is a suburban garden absolutely crammed with rare plants growing in a series of artificial microhabitats. This is a garden to go round slowly, looking at all the plants - small rhododendrons, alpines, herbaceous plants and peat-lovers. It was built up between 1922 and 1967 by John and Dorothy Renton, who bequeathed it to the National Trust for Scotland. This sort of garden depends for its success upon the understanding and plantsmanship of the gardeners who work in it, and the Trust has been fortunate with their employees at Branklyn since they took it on. |
