Wollerton is a remarkable modern garden, fully worthy of its status as an RHS Partner Garden. Lesley Jenkins began to lay it out in 1984 and sought, from the start, to combine the exquisite design, interesting plants and considerable artistry that are its hallmark today. The design is very tight: vista after vista opens up, each framed in a seemingly endless number of different ways. It is a model of how to manage space and volume in a garden - there is a strong emphasis upon line and symmetry. Firm and frequent pruning keeps it all in shape. The plantings seek to combine horticultural excellence with careful juxtapositions of colour and shape - both harmony and contrast are here in abundance. There are extensive collections of salvias, clematis and the more unusual perennials. The standard of maintenance is incomparable. |
