Growing and Diversifying


At this level schools should have:
• The garden and its purpose written into the school development plan
• A team of staff responsible for implementing the garden project
• The caretaker or grounds staff involved in the maintenance of the garden
• Pupils participating in the design and development of the garden
• A wide range of pupils involved in gardening activities in school lessons
• Regular fund-raising for the garden
• A range of plants growing
• Practices that demonstrate care for the environment eg reducing water use
• A holiday care programme
• Progress in pupils’ gardening skills
• Pupils learning to use an increasing range of tools safely
• Pupils becoming familiar with gardening vocabulary, and able to identify some crops and weeds
• Pupils learning to work together, respecting others and the world around them
• Pupils learning about where food comes from and how to grow food for a healthier diet
• Several staff with horticultural skills able to teach in the garden
• More than one curriculum subject being taught in the garden
• Signs and labels in the garden to increase the learning that can take place
• Governors and parents taking an active interest, with some participation
