Activities from participating schools

Here are some ideas contributed by schools that have taken part in Get Your Grown-ups Growing over the last two years:

• Parents bringing a fruit tree to school and planting it with their child
• Staging a gardeners’ question time with local experts
• Collecting leaves and constructing an ornate leaf heap eg the shape of a teapot, bear etc.
• Constructing compost heaps
• Digging and general maintenance
• Planting a bulb maze
• Inviting in the local Wildlife Trust to make bug houses with the children
• Children recording the event with video cameras and acting as reporters for a local newspaper
• Planting a strawberry patch
• Children demonstrating how IT can be used in the garden – a survey of different bugs found
• Making soup
• Planting bulbs or primroses in pots as an enterprise project
• Making wooden plant labels
• Presenting a mini-musical on making compost
• Taking cuttings of evergreen herbs
• Inviting the press via the school council
• Involving local gardening experts
• Making lunch for adults that come in to help
• Using gardening club or eco club members as ‘experts’ to explain displays and activities
• Making scarecrows for visitors to judge
• Bringing in local garden centres to complete a task with the children eg propagation
• Using local community wardens etc.
