Get Your Grown-ups Growing

RHS Get Your Grown-ups Growing events take place across the country

East of England

Staff and grown-ups joined the children in a fun day of activities at St Andrews Junior school in Colchester as part of the Get Your Grown-ups Growing project.

Lisa Frith-Sly, Year 4 Teacher explained what the school had planned for the day: “We’ve got lots of different things going on. Staff from our local Waitrose are kindly coming to help us create an orchard using apple trees which they have donated. One Waitrose staff member has even offered us some well rotted manure to enrich our vegetable beds! We are installing a water butt to collect rainwater from our shed for watering the plants. We’ll be planting a ‘daffodil spiral’ so that when they’re in full flower the children will be able to run through the maze of plants. After school, children will lead a tour of their new, improved garden complete with mini orchard and there will be a chance for grown-ups to plant winter salad plants to take home with them.

”We used the activity ideas and invites in the free pack the RHS sent us to let everyone know about our event. The response has been fantastic - we’ve had lots of enquiries from parents as well as members of the local community who are keen to come and lend a hand. We’re looking forward to a great turnout to help transform the garden in a way we wouldn’t have been able to do by ourselves.”
