Pupils win top community award for their school

July 08 - Congratulations Sir Leman High School

The Sir Leman High School in Beccles was presented with a top community award this week in recognition of its school garden.

The school was presented with the Pride of Beccles School Award by mayor David Smith for transforming part of its school grounds into a fully functioning garden for all the pupils and teachers to use. The school is involved with the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening, which encourages all schools to start gardening to provide children with fun and hands-on learning opportunities to grow plants and garden sustainably.

The garden has raised beds planted with fruit and vegetables such as radishes, lettuces, potatoes, onions, carrots, strawberries and tomatoes.

The presentation recently marked the official opening of the garden after nearly a year of hard work by the pupils, Sir John Leman High School's enterprise manager Allison Copeman, and the RHS's school gardening adviser, Alison Findlay. Ms Copeman said: "The school garden grew out of a desire to get the children learning outdoors. I am a keen gardener myself but I couldn't have planned wuch a venture without the help of Alison from the RHS. To be recognised by the town and mayor for all our hard work is so exciting".
