RHS Community Campaigns

Community gardening is a wonderful way of getting to know your neighbours, doing your bit for the environment, brightening up where you live and having a more active and healthier lifestyle. The RHS has several community gardening schemes which could provide additional support and encouragement to schools participating in the Campaign for School Gardening and they are:

Britain in Bloom
Neighbourhood Awards
Affiliated Societies.

For full details on each scheme click here.

These RHS community gardening initiatives could help your school by:

  • Offering you expert gardening advice
  • Helping you let people know about what you’re doing
  • Making your school a part of gardening and environmental initiatives in the wider community
  • Giving you additional support and encouragement (i.e. volunteers, local recognition etc.)
  • Providing you with new opportunities by engaging you in other projects.

To find your local “in Bloom” group, Neighbourhood Award Group or Affiliated Society please send an e-mail with your school, town and postcode to britaininbloom@rhs.org.uk

RHS Britian in Bloom

Britain in Bloom is one of the largest horticultural campaigns in Europe which empowers people to work together throughout the year to create a cleaner and greener Britain through community action. Participants work to earn top marks in horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation. All Britain in Bloom participants, at any level, are encouraged to involve children and young people in their local “in Bloom” initiatives and supporting your Campaign for School Gardening activities is a great way for them to do this so don’t hesitate to contact your local co-ordinator to see how they can help.

Neighbourhood Awards

The RHS Neighbourhood Awards (A Britain in Bloom Campaign) is a programme which supports and recognises community groups and projects across the UK who are working to clean up and green up their local patch. Entries are visited by Britain in Bloom community gardening experts who provide valuable feedback and helpful advice on how to develop and make on-going improvements. Neighbourhood Awards groups focus on a specific project or area and don’t involve the whole community the way Britain in Bloom groups do but there may be a group/project near you that your school could become a part of; we’re sure they would welcome your participation. Or maybe your school wants to start it’s own Neighbourhood Awards project with the local community!

RHS Affiliated Societies

The RHS Affiliated Societies scheme is the UK’s largest network of gardening clubs and horticultural societies, supporting over 2,750 clubs and societies. Our aims are to help put keen gardeners in touch with one another and to support gardening clubs in all that they do. We aim to provide opportunities for clubs/societies to share their gardening know-how and to encourage more keen gardeners to join their local society. Gardening clubs and their members have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to younger generations and through their affiliation and the variety of events that they organise they help us to promote horticulture to people of all ages and from all walks of life. Our Affiliated Societies are always eager to enthuse the next generation of gardeners and to share their knowledge so please don’t hesitate to contact them for support with your school garden.
