Two students awarded RHS bursaries
Two students were both recently awarded RHS bursaries towards attending the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) 7th International Congress on Education in Botanic Gardens to be held in Durban, South Africa in November this year (2009).
Both Zoe Barnes and Zoe Parfitt are keen orchid students at Writhlington School near Radstock in Avon, who specialize in orchid micropropagation and culture. They have shown exceptional promise, especially in terms of their horticultural knowledge and skills, along with effective communication at national events such as the Chelsea Flower Show 2009 where they exhibited with the Writhlington School Orchid Project. Not only were they interviewed by Alan Titchmarsh, but they were successful in gaining a gold medal for their display.
By supporting the girls’ attendance at the BGCI conference, the RHS Bursaries Committee was keen to also show that encouragement is given to young people wishing to pursue their horticultural interests and who have developed technical skills that are not too difficult to achieve.
They are writing a blog about their visit.
