Yorkshire in Africa

There is now a piece of Yorkshire growing in Africa

This Easter I had the exciting privilege of beginning a ‘growing link’ between schools in North Yorkshire and Africa. The project was designed to link Ripley Village School in North Yorkshire with Iringa International School in Tanzania. The children at Ripley school prepared for the link by designing beautiful pictures of features in their historical village to share with the children in Africa.

The "Growing Link":
Features such as a boar’s head fountain that commemorates when the castle owner was knighted. He saved the king from a nasty meeting with the boar whilst out hunting! The children also considered horticultural features of their area: the climate in North Yorkshire, and the soil, which was tested in order that the two schools growing conditions could be compared.

Questions I asked:
I went out to Iringa with many questions from the children that needed answering, ‘What are the common animals that roam in an African garden?’ ‘What plants are grown in their allotments?’ Little did they guess what the answers would be! To read more download the document below!
