Twilight Training

Invitation to a free Autumn Term School Gardening event
The RHS Campaign for School Gardening has a Regional Advisor working throughout Yorkshire and The Humber area. The Advisor is tasked to develop teachers practical horticultural skills, assist the development of school gardens and embed the rewarding practical activities that children enjoy so much into the curriculum whilst encouraging healthy eating and a love of the green environment.

In the last academic year two training sessions have been offered at each of 10 Partner Schools to assist staff from those schools and other local schools to develop their school gardens. The previous sessions concentrated on the design of the school garden, crops to grow, curriculum and web links and the gardening calendar as well as practical tasks such as seed sowing and planting.

If you are a Teacher, Teaching Assistant or parent helper we would like to invite you to a training session to be held at your nearest Partner School. We can accommodate up to 3 participants from each school to attend the training, subject to a maximum of 25 overall. This training is free and will include practical advice from John Hickling the Regional Advisor to assist you to develop gardening in your school.

Many of the sessions were oversubscribed in the spring and summer terms and early booking is therefore recommended.
Topics in the Autumn Term

1. Seasonal tasks in the school garden. These will include soil cultivation, testing and improvement,
Autumn seed sowing and bulb planting, Tasks will be hands-on wherever possible.

2.Ideas for practical gardening tasks and projects for children in the Autumn and Winter.

3.Ideas to involve more parents in the school garden

4.Sharing of school gardening experiences
You are invited to bring a sample of your soil, preferably in a clear glass jar (a coffee jar is ideal) with a top, for simple analysis and advice for improvement.

You will need to be prepared for outdoor activities and bring suitable footwear, gloves and dress for inclement weather. It is suggested that participants familiarize themselves with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening website to ensure maximum benefit from this training and in particular the Benchmarking scheme which unlocks prizes and web resources in simple progressive steps.
