Setting up a school garden

The course will aim to deliver an insight into setting up an allotment/garden/nursery within the school grounds, to be used by students at key stages 2, 3 and 4. Areas covered will include; selection of the site, involving local business and finding funding, what do we grow (vegetables, nursery stock/plants for sale, wildlife gardens etc.), greenhouse gardening, propagation techniques – practical, requirements for delivering accredited courses (NVQ’s etc.) and links to the Sustainable Schools Framework, Outdoor Learning Manifesto, Eco-Schools and other areas of the National Curriculum.

Following a short introduction about school garden development, the course will concentrate on how gardens can be used to deliver the curriculum. Gardening in school

This course is designed for those who are already gardening in school and wish to increase their skills. The focus for the day will be practical activities such as making seed drills, taking cuttings and combating pests and diseases. We will look at seasonal tasks that should be done in the school garden in June. It will also be an opportunity to share successes and ask questions!
