GETTING STARTED - A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO GROWING IN SCHOOL

Planning and setting up a school garden is suitable for schools that are currently at the Campaign for School Gardening’s Level’s one and two.

Those attending this day may be completely new to gardening or have some experience of gardening in their own home, but are new to school gardening.

The day will include some of the following topics: finding funding to start your garden, gardening on a limited budget, designing your school garden, health and safety in the school garden and gardening for the school year. Some basic horticultural skills will also be covered, for example, what tools to purchase and how to use them correctly, planting and establishing plants, seed sowing and soil testing and preparing soil for sowing and planting.

 


THE GREAT OUTDOORS - USING THE OUTSIDE SPACE WITH EARLY YEARS

No matter how big or small your outdoor area or local green space, you can create and offer exciting, challenging and investigative places and activities for children to experience.

A practical workshop offering inspiration, ideas and activities for early years outdoor spaces. This day will have an emphasis on gardening related activities.

 


NEXT STEPS - DEVELOPING YOUR SCHOOL GARDEN

This course is suitable for schools that are currently at the Campaign for School Gardening’s Level’s 3 and 4.

The expectation would be that attendees on this course have some knowledge themselves of gardening and have established a school garden.

The day will include some of the following topics: how to integrate gardening with your teaching, differentiating areas of the garden (food growing, wildlife and sensory), sustainable gardening practices, incl. composting and gardening for the school year.

Some horticultural skills will also be covered, for example, propagation of plants from seed and taking vegetative cuttings, identification of a range of common garden plants and weeds, enterprise (making money) using the garden.
